Leading the Team as a Mechanical Systems Engineer: Supporting Satellite Development from Analysis to Team Management
Interviewer (PR): Today, we’re talking with Mr. Kawakatsu, who currently serves as a Mechanical Systems Engineer. Having joined Synspective from another industry, he’s now driving satellite development. Mr. Kawakatsu, could you begin by describing your current responsibilities?
Shotaro: I’m mainly in charge of the overall structural design of our SAR satellite, “StriX.” Initially, my role was focused on structural analysis, but after some team restructuring, I transitioned into a more managerial role, coordinating the team and supporting team members. Of course, I continue to work on system design tasks, but now ensuring the team can progress smoothly with projects is an essential part of my role.
A Reignited Passion for Space: From Motorbikes and Materials to Space
Interviewer (PR): It sounds like your role covers a broad range of responsibilities. Could you also share a bit about your career path and how you ended up joining Synspective?
Shotaro: I spent about four years designing the chassis for racing motorbikes, focusing on structural design and aerodynamic analysis. Then, I worked at a materials manufacturer, where I handled thermal fluid analysis and production technology in the glass manufacturing processes. During my job search, an agent introduced me to Synspective. I’ve always been interested in space; I was part of the Space Boys Club as a kid, and I majored in aerospace engineering in graduate school. Wanting to apply my experience and return to the space industry, I joined Synspective in February 2023, so it’s been just over a year now.

Interviewer (PR): Moving from motorbikes to materials, and now satellites, did you have any concerns about the transition? Do you find any unique challenges in the space industry?
Shotaro: Before joining Synspective, I thought space quality might be overly specialized, but my perspective has changed slightly. Of course, strict standards exist, but at Synspective, where we develop and operate our own satellites, there is greater flexibility in determining specifications compared to traditional government-led projects. For instance, industrial standards from the automobile industry can sometimes be applicable. As a result, experience from other sectors, such as mass production, often proves valuable. People should feel encouraged to jump into different industries without overthinking their uniqueness. Although there are many space-specific considerations to understand, there’s no need to be overly apprehensive.
Growth from Unprecedented Challenges: The Complexity and Reward of Building Constellations and the Appeal of Open Discussions
Interviewer (PR): It’s great to hear that experience from other industries can be useful. Could you share the rewarding aspects and challenges you face in your work?
Shotaro: One of the rewarding yet challenging aspects is building satellite constellations, which remains a relatively rare endeavor globally. Producing dozens of satellites a year requires a unique balance, unlike the one-off production typical of conventional satellites or mass production common in the automotive industry. As a team, we’re continuously experimenting to determine how much to standardize and where to allow customization. Moreover, since we’re still a young company, many of our processes are being developed, making team discussions both challenging and rewarding.
A space-specific difficulty is that once satellites are in orbit, we can’t inspect or repair them directly, which makes thorough ground testing essential. However, increased testing means higher costs and extended timelines. Striking the right balance between development speed and risk involves constant judgment calls and requires input from everyone. Both the organization and the business are evolving rapidly, offering opportunities for me to change and grow at the forefront. Additionally, there’s a culture of open discussion regardless of age or position, which is stimulating given our team members’ diverse backgrounds.
Interviewer (PR): How do you find the working environment at the Yamato Technology Center?
Shotaro: Our greatest advantage is that our mechanical system engineers and satellite development teams are based in the same building where the satellites are assembled. We can easily visit the site or directly consult with manufacturing team members, which is a significant advantage for advancing development. Additionally, our office includes meeting rooms, focus booths, and open spaces for casual meetings, creating an environment that fosters easy communication.
At the Yamato Technology Center, cross-department lunch meetings and gatherings are held regularly
Interviewer (PR): Finally, what kind of person would be a good fit for Synspective?
Shotaro: You should have expertise or in-depth knowledge in manufacturing. Moreover, given the importance of interdepartmental collaboration and teamwork at Synspective, someone who can communicate effectively and work cooperatively on projects would be ideal. Many of our company structures and rules are still evolving, so we welcome individuals eager to collaborate, think creatively, and improve the status quo.
Enjoying change is also important. Responsibilities might shift, so someone flexible and open to new challenges will thrive more than someone who prefers focusing on a single task. We seek motivated individuals ready to apply their knowledge and experience, engage and collaborate with colleagues, and innovate as part of a team.
Interviewer (PR): Thank you, Mr. Kawakatsu, for sharing your valuable insights today.
