Every August, as red and white flags go up across the island, Singapore pauses to reflect on how far it has come. As we marked our 61st National Day, the phrase Majulah Singapura, or “Onward Singapore,” echoed everywhere.
From where I sit at Synspective SG, “onward” points at something specific and urgent: the climate future of the Indo-Pacific.
We often call this region the world’s economic engine. It is also on the front line of climate risk. The solutions to that risk have to be built here, with an Asian-centered understanding of what we are actually up against.
Tied Together by Climate
The climate crisis is not an abstract, future threat in our part of the world. We feel it now in the intensifying typhoons disrupting supply chains in Vietnam, the coastal erosion threatening communities in Indonesia, and the sinking ground beneath some of our largest megacities.
What happens in one country inevitably reaches the rest of us. A flooded manufacturing hub or a disrupted port means stalled assembly lines and economic shocks across the entire region. Vulnerability here is interconnected, which means our resilience has to be, too. We cannot build climate defenses in silos. We need cross-border partnerships and shared intelligence.
The Cloud Barrier in the Tropics
The practical hurdle is that resilience requires reliable data, and the tropics are notoriously hard to observe.
Ours is a region of intense monsoons and heavy, persistent cloud cover. When a major storm hits, and we urgently need to know which roads are flooded or where landslides have struck, we need imagery that does not depend on clear skies.
This is why Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is so vital here. SAR is an active sensor. It emits its own microwave signals and measures what returns, which means it can cut through clouds, torrential rain, and the dead of night to capture high-resolution imagery of the ground below.
For the Indo-Pacific, SAR is not a nice-to-have upgrade. It is the bare minimum required to adapt. Whether monitoring subtle ground subsidence to protect infrastructure or mapping flood extents in near real time to direct emergency responders, SAR delivers the 24/7 ground truth decision-makers need.
The Nerve Center for Climate Resilience
So why build this from Singapore?
Because Singapore is far more than a dot on the map. It is the trusted nerve center of the Indo-Pacific. Scaling climate technology takes deep tech talent, rigorous data governance, and patient capital, all of which Singapore has cultivated deliberately.
Just as important, Singapore is a neutral, collaborative hub that bridges global technology and localized, Asian-specific needs. As a living lab for sustainable urban development, it proves that economic growth need not come at the expense of the environment, and it translates complex climate data into strategies the rest of the region can trust and adopt.
This year carries a special resonance for us.2026 marks SJ60, six decades of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.
